Recently, two board members, Michele Brown, YFL Treasurer, and Gré Clifton, had the opportunity to visit with one of Bakersfield’s most active and prestigious charitable organizations.
On May 13, 2014, Junior League held their annual spring dinner meeting at the elegant Bell Tower Club in downtown Bakersfield, and Junior League Club members presented Youth Financial Literacy with a check for $1000 supporting our organization.
Junior League is an organization strongly based on volunteerism and community service, with their primary outreach being to women and children. The Junior League is nationwide and has the honor of having high profile members such as several former first ladies such as Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan and Barbara and Laura Bush, as members, as well as numerous other famous and influential women throughout the last century. In the last year alone, Junior League of Bakersfield has awarded $23,000 in funding to 10 worthy local non-profits who all share their same mission of improving the lives of women and children. This does not even account for the countless thousands of hours of dedicated community service these women give freely to our community. With a membership of almost 400, Junior League’s impact can be felt far and wide in Bakersfield!
The Bakersfield Chapter found out about YFL when one of the members spotted a posting on our Facebook page and decided it would be an excellent project to fund. Each year, she explained, Junior League collects fees from members who were unable to complete their community service for the term. With this extra funding, they choose a qualified organization to donate to and send the money back into the community. So we would like express our heartfelt gratitude to Junior League for including us in their circle of giving!
